The Icing on the Cake
When Dawn and Scott began planning their family, they knew adoption was in the cards. Scott had aged out of foster care as a child – waiting for a forever family that never happened. While many families are seeking younger children, they had wanted to adopt a teenager because they knew that you don’t stop needing a parent at 18. Adopting siblings wasn’t part of the plan…as they put it, “it was the icing on the cake.”
After growing their family biologically and getting involved in the dependency system to provide a safe place for a friend of the family, Dawn and Scott decided the time to adopt was now and began the process to get an adoption home study completed. With study in hand, they began to inquire on children.
While Dawn and Scott began inquiring on Heart Gallery children. They made contact with a case manager who directed them to Alexis and Jessica – two young ladies returning to the Heart Gallery. Alexis and Jessica had a story to tell and the Heart Gallery helped them share it with the world. After seeing their video, Dawn and Scott knew they had to learn more.
Dawn and Scott met Alexis and Jessica and knew they were meeting their daughters. The girls weren’t so sure. They’d worked with their case manager to help them determine what they wanted out of a family – to stay local and remain in contact with the many connections they had made, to be part of a family, and to stay together. They weren’t convinced until they met the rest of their family who welcomed them with open arms – and until Dawn and Scott told them they wanted both of them for who they were as individuals. On 10/13/2015, the Gallagher family grew by two making for a total of five princesses living under the same roof in addition to more adult children! The love in this family speaks for itself – but in case you can’t read it in their expressions, you can read it on their homemade shirts. They read “Gallagher Family est 10/13/2015.”
