Empty Nesters No More
Jeff and Nancy Jansen began their journey to adoption in 2012 after their five biological children left the nest.
After completing the required MAPP classes, they began looking at the Heart Gallery of Pinellas & Pasco for a child. They were looking for a child who was 8-14 yrs old.
They were first matched with AJ, who was outside of their profile but fell in love with his smile in his Heart Gallery photo. The Jansen’s met their son on November 1st of 2012 and the adoption finalized the following year in April. While the family wanted to adopt again immediately, they waited to give AJ time to settle into his new family.
After AJ turned 18, the Jansen family began looking for child. This time, they were hoping to be matched with a sibling group. Jacob and Zachary had been initially placed on the Heart Gallery in October of 2012. The Jansen’s remembered seeing them online the same day as they began the process with AJ. After meeting Jacob and Zachary at a match event, the Jansen’s inquired about adopting them. They met them again at a match event held at a Tampa Bay Rays game in the Home Run Club Suite. The boys wanted to be adopted together, but were listed as separate children on the Heart Gallery at their agency’s request. Over the next couple of months, the family bonded and grew together. Jacob and Zachary moved in and on February 24, 2015 became part of the Jansen clan.
The transition from “group home life” to “family life” has been a challenge – for the whole family. Nancy says it best, “This journey has been a learning and growing experience for Jeff and me. Through it all, the one constant has been love. Behaviors and consequences change, the love does not.”
